Apply for 2025-26 GSGA President and Vice President Roles!
The Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA) is calling for passionate and driven individuals to step into its next generation of leadership roles: President and Executive Vice President. These positions offer a unique opportunity to lead, advocate, and create a lasting impact on graduate student life. Here’s what you can look forward to as a GSGA leader:
Support from Across Campus
At GSGA, you’re never alone in your efforts. From organizing major events like the Fall Picnic to hosting the annual CRIDC (Campus Research and Innovation Development Conference), GSGA leaders receive unwavering support from university staff, administrators, and faculty members.
“When we have new ideas and need feedback or advice, we never run short of people willing to help,” Kiera Tran, the current GSGA president comments. “The support we’ve received includes strategies, contacts, perspectives, and even resources to bring our initiatives to life.”
This network of support ensures that GSGA leaders can turn their visions into reality while fostering strong relationships across campus.
Work with an Excellent Team
One of the greatest privileges of being a leader at GSGA is the opportunity to form and work with a dream team. GSGA represents graduate student affairs across a wide spectrum, encompassing diverse talents, skills, and perspectives.
“Graduate students are incredible problem solvers,” Donglai Yang, the current Executive Vice President says. “You’ll have the chance to collaborate with a few of them from different academic departments, who approach challenges in innovative ways, thanks to their drastically different backgrounds and experiences.”
This diversity creates a vibrant and dynamic working environment, where every voice matters, and every idea contributes to building a stronger graduate student community.
Make a Substantial Impact on Graduate Life
GSGA is uniquely positioned to address some of the most pressing challenges graduate students face today—and anticipate those of tomorrow. From advocating for policy changes with the housing department to improving transparency around GTA/GRA stipends, the scope of GSGA’s work is wide-reaching.
Some of the key initiatives include:
- Surveying the cost of living to better understand and address financial challenges.
- Advocating for improved off-campus renting experiences.
- Managing the conference travel fund to support academic and professional development.
- Broadcasting mental health resources to ensure students are aware of the support available to them.
- Running grad-focused social and career development events
- Highlighting grad experience and student business
- Creating liaison between grad students through peer mentorship
In addition to these ongoing efforts, GSGA leaders and their cabinet have the freedom and resources to pursue their own initiatives, allowing them to leave a personal mark on the graduate student experience.
Gain Unique Leadership Training
Serving as a GSGA leader is more than just a title—it’s a transformative leadership experience. As the bridge between graduate students and university administration, you’ll develop critical skills in advocacy, communication, and diplomacy.
“Being a GSGA leader means being the voice of graduate students,” Kiera says. “It requires outspoken advocacy when our perspectives aren’t being considered and clear, thorough communication when issues are complex. Finding that delicate balance is a skill that will serve you well, not only in grad school but throughout your career.”
This role provides a rare opportunity to hone leadership skills that complement your academic journey and prepare you for future challenges, whether in academia, industry, or beyond.
